What is Philosophy?
Philosophy is the superset of all sciences. It is the comparison of ideas to the empirical world in the pursuit of truth from a basis of reasoning from first principles. It is the pursuit of knowledge, both of the self and of other, the culmination of which is wisdom and the goal of which is happiness. It is all about the relationship we have to ourselves, to the world and to others.
It is through philosophy that we learn not only what is but what ought. Philosophy avoids no topics and in the Contingent, all cards are on the table. Not only will we discuss those topics of which, in your relationships, might often thicken the air with tension but we will explore the reasons *why* they make ourselves and others so tense.
The beginning of philosophy is to understand the world through a deeper understanding of ourselves, others and how we relate to one another through ethics.
Welcome to the Philadelphia Contingent, where the strongest, most intelligent minds collaborate to seek truth, not just the truth about the world but the truth that we find from an examination of our selves. The truth we discover from making that which was unconscious, conscious.
Do you have what it takes? Are you honest enough? Are you curious enough? Are you strong enough to get on the white water rapid ride of philosophy? If so, come join us and we will embark on a relentlessly curious, collaborative exploration to achieve a deeper connection with yourself and others, reach spine tingling truths and ideas, explore our existing and future relationships, gain new perspectives on old ideas and experience true intimacy and companionship as you have never experienced it before.
We'll explore topics such as:
So what are first principles anyway?
How do we know what is true and what is false?
What are ethics and how do we know what is good and evil?
Do gods exist?
How should society run?
How can we become happier?
And so much more...
“ Great group to discuss philosophy and its application in the real world -- and in personal lives! ”
“ It will challenge your assumptions, that's for sure. ”

"You can't have a debate without defining terms. If you say X is Y and I say X cannot be Y because of Z you cannot then redefine X as A and then say A is Y therefore X is Y. This is a fallacy called "moving the goal post"...."
"Dogmatic? Really? I'm not sure how that is an argument against my reasoning...."
"Interesting article on agnosticism: http://www.slate.com/..."
